I'm Keva Develle Horry, I'm so delighted to share my lounge with you. I was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and raised in Tuscalousa, Alabama. You've heard the saying, "you can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl" well, that's true, I'm a true "southern girl" and I'm proud of my roots. Southern living has taught me so much, but the greatest lesson is by far that no matter where you're from, the circumstances of life come to us all.
I've lived the majority of my adult life in the shadow of championship fame. I've traveled across the U.S. and crossed borders to some of the worlds most breathtaking wonders. From walking along some of the most breathtaking beaches, to sitting along the sidelines of proud moments in the NBA. I've cruised on the Nile, salsa danced in Cuba and prepared family meals from a mountaintop in Italy. I've seen it all and I've had it all. Mansions, diamonds, Bentleys, you name it. I've had a front row seat to the best of everything that life has to offer. But none of it brought me satisfaction like the simple joy of being a mother and enjoying time with family and friends.
Long before this life, I was a young college student, bright eyed, naive and full of aspiration like most young ladies leaving home and heading off to college.
It was my last years, the year I would earn an Arts and Sciences degree (with a focus on Communications) at the University of Alabama. I remember so well, my dream to become a six o’clock national news anchor. It was a dream that seemed to be in reach. My role model was Connie Chung. At the time, she was a woman of color and winning as a national television news anchor. I fondly remember leaving class everyday, running to my dorm room and watching and mimicking Connie Chung's every move. I didn't have a microphone but the handle of my comb or curling iron worked just fine. Whatever she said, I said back as if I were her.
Being a southern girl wasn't easy. Alabama like many southern states is a state with a turbulent history of racial divide, a dream as big as mine, would surely be a stretch for a young African American girl, and that wouldn't prove to be my greatest obstacle.
I was 5'0 nothing and he was the tallest man I knew. Two lovebirds, scraping pennies just to enjoy a movie together. We had nothing but love until we found ourselves young, pregnant and afraid. marriage and the NBA.
